1st Mariner Arena Baltimore History
1st Mariner Arena is Baltimore’s biggest indoor entertainment arena. It’ been a major factor in growth and prosperity of Baltimore Maryland. 1st Mariner Arena first opened in 1962. It was the foundational element in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor redevelopment. The arena was renovated in the 1980’s. 1st Mariner Arena is within walking distance from the harbor front hotels and activities. Parking at 1st Mariner Arena is plentiful both in the attached garage and nearby.
1st Mariner Arena was the Civic Center in 1962. In 1986 the arena was renamed the Baltimore Arena. In 2003 was renamed 1st Mariner Arena.
1st Mariner Arena is owned by The City of Baltimore. An average of 800,000 guests attend 120 events annually. It is home to the Baltimore Blast MISL. The arena hosts shows like Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Circus, Sesame Street Live, Disney on Ice, Stars on Ice, Monster Jam, Motocross, WWE Wrestling each year. 1st Mariner Arena also hosts events such as boxing, basketball, graduations, tennis, comedy shows and other events.
SMG of Philadelphia assumed leadership of 1st Mariner Arena in 1999. Since then the Arena has hosted many major events. In April of 2006 1st Mariner Arena hosted the 55th Annual Miss USA Competition. Also some of the biggest names such as Brittany Spears, Janet Jackson, Toby Keith, The Eagles, Kanye West, Rascal Flatts, U2, Martina McBride, Hilary Duff, the Rolling Stones and more have entertained at 1st Mariner Arena.
1st Mariner Arena seats 11,000 plus additional temporary seats. Temporary seating on the floor and stage may be used for various event configurations. With floor seating the capacity rises to 13,500 plus capacities can be as high as 14,000. The Arena can also be curtained down to a 5,000 capacity with a portable stage house center.
The ice system at 1st Mariner Arena was completely replaced in 1997.
1st Mariner Arena is accessible from Interstates I-95, I-295, I-83 and I-395. It is approximately seven miles from Baltimore/Washington Int’l Airport. The light rail and bus lines have a stop at 1st Mariner Arena.
