August 28, 2015 by Dale Loflin – Amway Center, former Amway Arena, was also known as TD Waterhouse Centre in 2000. Located downtown Orlando, it’s not far from a rejuvenated historic park area surrounding Lake Eola where you will find good restaurants, museums and the Library. It’s a safe, bustling area full of life. A convenient place to stay is at the newly remodeled Embassy Suites where I stayed right after the remodeling. It features a fabulous breakfast buffet in the morning, relaxing pool area, which was also a great place to watch the parades and activies in the street below.
Amway Center History – Amway Arena opened originally as The Orlando Arena in January 1989. In 2000 the naming rights were sold to TD Waterhouse. From the turn of the century until 2006 the arena was called TD Waterhouse Centre. December 2006 Amway announced the Arena would be called Amway Arena, then was renamed the Amway Center on August 3, 2009.
Amway Center is home to Orlando Magic, Orlando Predators, and Orlando Sharks. It’s also the primary host for Orlando’s biggest concerts and sports events. The arena seats over 17,000 for basketball games, almost 16,000 for arena football and ice hockey.
